“‘Jugaad’ or frugal innovation is among the easiest ways for young people to become entrepreneurs”, Veerendra Patil technology trainer said in Bidar on Sunday.
He was speaking at “Idea Sangama”, a project to motivate college students to find technical solutions to every day problems.
He asked young people to observe and document problems in their surroundings, think about solving them using simple techniques and put them in to practice. The key is to think like a user and not like a technologist, he said.
Indians are world leaders in Jugaad or frugal innovation because of their instinct to find low cost solutions using materials easily available to them, he said. He gave examples of the large number of Indians who win grants on websites like www.innocentive.com, that encourages people to come up with new ideas.
He spoke of how uneducated Indians had come up with innovative solutions to long pending problems that were big challenges to scientists.
Dr. Patil said that utility and novelty were the attributes of innovation. This comes out of focused hard work and creativity, he said.
