N. Kumar, judge of the High Court of Karnataka, on Thursday stressed the need for a speedy criminal justice system in the country. Speaking at the inauguration of a training session for prosecuting officers here, Mr. Kumar said: “With the recent cases of rape, there is an increased interest in the criminal justice system and it is the responsibility of the public prosecutors to retain the faith of the public and assure them of justice.” It was important to dispose of cases without keeping them pending.
With various amendments being introduced in the criminal justice system, it was essential that prosecutors kept themselves abreast of new laws, he said. It was essential that computers with an Internet connection be made available to public prosecutors, especially in the taluk level, to enable this. The Karnataka Judicial Academy should empower public prosecutors to face challenges, he added.
Lokayukta Bhaskar Rao suggested that the jail term for all major crimes such as rape and murder be a minimum of five years.
The number of cyber crimes was increasing and most of the cyber crime offenders were in the age group 20 to 30, Mr. Rao said.
