In all, 144 medical graduates of JSS Medical College in the city received their certificates at the Graduation Day on Wednesday.

The former judge of the Supreme Court Shivaraj V. Patil addressed the passing out medical graduates of the 2012-13 batch and stressed upon the importance of refurbishing the image of the medical profession. He said one had to make a conscious effort to maintain and sustain the nobility of the profession. He cited an article by a doctor who found that kickbacks for referrals, irrational drug prescriptions and unnecessary interventions were in vogue. “This state of affairs is certainly undesirable,” he said.

He said though the number of educational institutions in the country increased after independence, their quality had fallen. “Educational institutions are not industries manufacturing degrees, diplomas and certificates. They have a greater purpose and goal,” he said. The status of any educational institution can be judged by the number of students who emerge from the campus as competent, vibrant, compassionate and good human beings, besides being responsible and responsive to the needs of society, he added.
