Joyous moment as Tungabhadra water reaches Gadag

August 16, 2016 02:51 am | Updated 02:51 am IST - HUBBALLI:

The long-pending project of drawing water from the Tungabhadra river to Gadag town was commissioned on the 70 Independence Day with pumped river water filling up the Bhishma Kere (tank) in Gadag city on Monday. Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister H.K. Patil was witness to the joyous occasion of water flowing into the Bhisma Kere and shared the joy with others who had congregated on the tank premises to witness a historic occasion.

The arrival of the river water, which is being lifted from three different points, has raised the hopes of the residents of the city, who often complained about irregular drinking water supply.

The project is part of the much-delayed Singatalur Lift Irrigation Scheme, which provides irrigation to lakhs of acres of farmland in Mundargi, Shirahatti and Gadag taluks of Gadag district.

The Bhishma Kere has a landmark: a gigantic statue of 12th century social reformer Sri Basaveshwara.
