The Janata Dal (Secular) has resolved to focus on the Cauvery and Krishna waters issues during the campaign for the Legislative Assembly elections, slated for May.
At a convention organised by the party on Monday, party State unit president H.D. Kumaraswamy declared that the JD(S) would fight to “protect the interests of the people in Cauvery and Krishna basins” if elected to power.
The meet was attended by prominent leaders and district unit presidents, among others.
Accusing the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party of “sacrificing the interests of the State on the Cauvery issue”, he cautioned that a similar fate would befall people in the Krishna basin if the Congress secured a mandate in the State.
Party president H.D. Deve Gowda said he was prepared to launch a fast-unto-death to get justice for people dependent on the Cauvery.
Rejecting suggestions that the JD(S) had fared badly in the urban local body elections, Mr. Gowda asserted that it was the percentage of votes got by the party that mattered and not the number of seats. The JD (S) knew it was difficult to fight against the “money power and muscle power” of both the national parties.
Mr. Kumaraswamy accused the Congress of not acting as a responsible Opposition and claimed that it was the JD(S) that had put up a relentless fight against corruption.
