The Janata Dal (Secular) has gained an absolute majority in Sorab Taluk Panchayat (TP) by winning 11 of the total 19 seats.
The counting of votes of the election for TP was held at the premises of Government First Grade College in Sorab town on Tuesday. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured five seats while the Congress managed to win three seats.
Procession taken out
After the announcement of the result, JD(S) activists celebrated by bursting crackers. They took the winning candidates out in a procession on the main streets of the town.
It may be mentioned here that, in the recently held Zilla Panchayat election, of the five constituencies in Sorab taluk, the JD(S) had registered victory in four constituencies.
Speaking to presspersons, Sorab MLA Madhu Bangarappa said that, disillusioned with the misrule of BJP-led government at the Centre and Congress government in the State, the voters have supported JD(S). The victory has boosted the morale of JD(S) activists, he added.
Reason for defeat
Meanwhile, president of Shivamogga District Congress Committee T.N. Srinivas told presspersons in Shivamogga city that the party would introspect on the reasons for the defeat. He said that, the minor differences among party leaders, with regard to the distribution of ticket, were also responsible for the loss.
