JD(S) eyes two more Assembly seats in Raichur

May 11, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - RAICHUR:

M. Virupakshi, newly appointed district president of the Janata Dal (Secular), has exuded confidence that the party can win Raichur Rural and Manvi constituencies in the next Assembly polls.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said that he would concentrate on restructuring party’s taluk units and strengthening the party from booth level.

“Comparing with many other districts, we are in a better position in Raichur with two MLAs and many elected members in the local bodies. We have also captured the Raichur Zilla Panchayat striking an alliance with the BJP. Our next goal is to double our strength in terms of Assembly seats.

“Considering our party’s support base at grassroots level, we can surely snatch Raichur Rural and Manvi constituencies from the BJP and the Congress, respectively, in the next Assembly election,” he said.

Unanimous choice

Mr. Virupakshi said that his appointment as district president was unanimous and in consultation with all district leaders, including Manappa Vajjal and Shivaraj Patil, MLAs of Lingsugur and Raichur, respectively, Hanumanthappa Alkod, former Minister and Venkatarao Nadagowda, former MLA from Sindhanur. “The State leadership consulted the district leaders and appointed me. It is true that there was some disappointment among others in the race. Now, we all are united for a cause putting aside our differences and disappointments,” he said.
