It is common to see children from different localities come to play at the children’s corner in Bhujanga Park, located in the heart of the city, every day.

In the evenings, the corner is filled with the fun, frolic and laughter of the little ones.

Senior citizens and parents usually stroll on the walking track while the children play, or they sit on the seats on the northern side of the children’s corner and watch them play.

But the various facilities for the children at the park are in a pathetic condition.

There are two different swing sets at the park, both without seats on them. The chains of the swing seats hang in the air.

The staircase on three sides to one of the slides have rusted. The lone merry-go-round has got grounded and is unusable.

One of the see-saws has no handles. As a result, the children have to play on just one slide and swing set.

Since a large number of people visit the corner, one can find a lot of paper and plastic materials strewn around.

Repair and maintenance

The Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) has reached an agreement with a nationalised bank for repair and maintenance of the park.

P. Yuvaraj, CMC Commissioner, told The Hindu that the number of children visiting the park and the children’s corner had now increased on account of the summer holidays.

“I have personally inspected the spot. I have directed the Commissioner and CMC engineers to do a detailed estimate of the repairs needed for the equipment in the park. The repair and renovation work will start in a week’s time,” he said.

CMC Commissioner D. Manjunathayya said that the CMC had also urged the nationalised bank to take up the repair and maintenance work of the park including the children’s corner as soon as possible.
