Political families had fought hard for power, pride and prestige. The sun-baked political canvas that saw sibling rivalry and contests by father-son duo, among others, finally threw up mixed results for families, as the results of the elections to Legislative Assembly were announced on Wednesday.
While some families recorded complete success in their pursuit, for some it was mixed while a few others drew blank.
The contests by the family members of Janata Dal (Secular) national president H.D. Deve Gowda, which had drawn attention, received mixed results.
While his sons the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and the former Minister H.D. Revanna won from Ramanagaram and Holenarsipur, respectively, with comfortable margins, Mr. Kumaraswamy’s wife Anitha Kumaraswamy lost in Channapatna to Samajwadi Party candidate and former Minister C.P. Yogeshwar. Ms. Kumaraswamy was elected to the Assembly from Madhugiri.
D.C. Thammanna, related to Mr. Deve Gowda’s family by marriage, won from Maddur on the JD(S) ticket.
Wednesday’s results have been embarrassing for the former Railway Minister C.K. Jaffer Sharief. While his son-in-law Syed Yasin lost in Raichur, the veteran politician’s grandson C.K. Rahman Sharief lost from Hebbal in Bangalore.
The contest between the sons of the former Chief Minister late S. Bangarappa — Kumar Bangarappa of the Congress and Madhu Bangarappa of the JD(S) — in Sorab constituency in Shimoga district saw the latter romping home.
In Sagar constituency, also in Shimoga district, veteran Congress leader Kagodu Thimmappa defeated his nephew and JD(S) candidate Belur Gopalakrishna.
In Deodurg in Raichur district, A. Venkatesh Naik of the Congress defeated his grandson Shivananda Naik of the JD(S).
The Jarkiholi brothers of Belgaum have reasons to smile because Satish Jarkiholi won from Yemkanmardi on the Congress ticket, while Balachandra Jarkiholi of the BJP won from Arabhavi and Ramesh Jarkiholi of the Congress won from Gokak.
The Lad cousins, who contested on the Congress ticket, have also been successful in their pursuit. While Anil Lad won in Bellary City, Santosh Lad won from Kalghatagi in Dharwad district. The Guttedar cousins of Gulbarga had mixed results as the Congress nominee Malikayya Guttedar retained his seat in Afzalpur, his cousin Subash Rukmaiah Guttedar of the JD(S) lost in Aland.
The father-son duos of Shamanur Shivashankarappa (Davangere North) and S.S. Mallikarjun (Davangere South), and M. Krishnappa (Vijayanagar) and Priya Krishna (Govindrajnagar) won on the Congress ticket.
The KJP candidate in Bidar Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli and Congress candidate in Humnabad Rajashekar Patil, related by marriage, romped home to victory.
The founder of BSR Congress B. Sriramulu won from Bellary Rural, while his nephew Suresh Babu won from Kampli.
In Vijayanagar constituency in Bellary district, BJP candidate Anand Singh defeated his cousin Rani Samyuktha of the BSR Congress.
In KGF, Ramakka Y., mother of BJP legislator Y. Sampangi, won on the BJP ticket.
