Is the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) misleading the media and the public about the whereabouts of Legislative Assembly Speaker K.G. Bopaiah.
The person in-charge of the media in the ruling party told the media on Thursday that the Speaker had written a letter stating that he was away from Bangalore due to personal work and would return on Monday (February 28). Curiously, the media in-charge quoted from a letter which is “yet to be signed” by the Speaker.
When The Hindu contacted the Speaker’s office at the Vidhana Soudha, an official said: “We have not received any communication from the Speaker about his next visit to the office. We don’t know where he is.”
The 13 BJP rebel MLAs had on Wednesday urged Governor H.R. Bhardwaj to direct the Speaker to rush back to Bangalore to accept their resignations.
The MLAs, including C.M. Udasi and Shobha Karandlaje who quit as ministers, were taken aback when they were told Mr. Bopaiah was on tour while Assembly Secretary P. Omprakash was also not available on Wednesday.
