With the monsoon weakening, the inflow into the Krishna and other rivers in the district and four reservoirs has reduced.
Sources said that with the dwindling of inflow, the reservoirs, including Rakaskopp dam across the Markandeya river and Raja Lakhmagouda dam across the Ghataprabha river and Navilteerth dam across Malaprabha river in the district, that are major sources of drinking water and irrigation are short of full capacity.
According to Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board’s Executive Engineer Prasanna Murthy, the water level at Rakaskopp dam across the Markandeya river, the main source of drinking water for Belagavi city, had improved during the preceding week. There was marginal improvement by 0.25 ft during last 24 hours from 11.20 mm rainfall.
Officials at District Statistical Office said the district received a total rainfall of 1,849.50 mm this month (till July 22) as against 1,971.00 mm, the normal rainfall for the month.
