After the successful launch of Indira Canteens in the city, the Congress government in the state has decided to launch three more projects in the name of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi - Indira Clinic, Indira Transport and Indira Bus Pass.
All the schemes will be launched by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation.
Indira Transit Clinic will be inaugurated at the Kempegowda Bus Station at Majestic at 11 a.m. on Saturday (on December 2) to cater to the medical needs of BMTC staff and transit commuters.
Transport Minister H.M. Revanna said in view of Indira Gandhi’s centenary, the projects were named after her. Indira Gandhi had launched several welfare projects and had inspired him to join politics, he claimed.
Indira Transit Clinic is being set up with the collaboration of union and state governments and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Health Minister K.R. Ramesh Kumar, Urban Development Minister K.J. George and Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy will be during the inauguration, he said.
The clinic’s estimated cost is ₹15 lakh. Experienced doctors and nurses would be appointed. The clinic would be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and free first aid and emergency medical serviced would be provided. Based on the public response, the clinics will be extended to other TTMCs, he said.
He said under Indira Transport, the BMTC would extend bus services to women working in garment factories at subsidised rates. Indira Pass is a facility provided to women construction workers to travel by BMTC bus at subsidised rates.
Less Traffic Day
BMTC is all set to launch ‘less traffic day’ on second Sunday of every month in a bid to ease Bengaluru’s air and sound pollution.
The aim is programme is to promote use of public transport. The programme will be launched from the second Sunday of February 2018. The second Sunday in January 2018 is Sankranthi, a government holiday. Though the BMTC has already introduced “Bus Day”, it has not achieved expected results.
