After Indira Canteens, the Congress government in the State has decided to launch three more projects, all in the name of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi — Indira Clinic, Indira Transport, and Indira Bus Pass. All the three schemes are to be launched by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation.

Indira Transit Clinic will be inaugurated at Kempegowda bus stand at Majestic at 11 a.m. on Saturday to cater to BMTC staff and transit commuters.

Indira Transport is a bus service for women working in garment factories at subsidised rates. Indira Pass is a facility for women construction workers to travel by BMTC bus at subsidised rates. Transport Minister H.M. Revanna said the projects are named after the former Prime Minister to mark her centenary.

Asked why “Indira” was prefixed to every one of the schemes, Mr. Revanna claimed that it was because Indira Gandhi had launched several welfare projects and she was the inspiration for him to enter politics. Indira Transit Clinics are being set up with the collaboration of Union, State governments and the BBMP. Health Minister K.R. Ramesh Kumar, Urban Development Minister K.J. George and Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy will be present, he said.

The clinic’s estimated cost is ₹15 lakh. Experienced doctors and nurses will be appointed for the clinics and it would function from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free first aid and emergency medical services will be provided. Based on the public response, the clinics will be extended to other TTMCs, he said.
