The Karnataka High Court, on Monday, declared that the Indian Nursing Council (INC) has no authority to grant recognition to institutions imparting nursing courses.
The court also restrained INC from publishing on its website the materials indicating that the institutions imparting nursing courses have to obtain recognition from it.
Justice L. Narayana Swamy passed the order, while allowing petitions filed by the Karnataka State Association of the Managements’ of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences Institutions, and some of the nursing colleges.
The petitioner-association had sought a declaration, based on the verdicts of the Supreme Court and earlier verdicts of the High Court, that ruled that the INC has no authority to grant recognition to the institutions imparting nursing courses, such as Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife, General Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing and Master of Nursing.
The petitioners had claimed that it was only the state government and the university to which they were affiliated to that could grant recognition to the nursing institutions.
