Five persons, who allegedly molested and assaulted Bangalore students near Kanakapura bus-stand on Wednesday night, were remanded in judicial custody till August 26 by a local court in Ramanagaram.

Firdaus Ahmed, Syed Mathin, Arshad Khan, Waseem Akram Khan and Rizwan Ahmed were produced before the court, Ramanagaram Superintendent of Police Anupam Agarwal told The Hindu on Friday.

Road rage

Road rage was the reason for the incident that was reported at 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday, Mr. Agarwal said.

Denying that the police refused to register the complaint initially, he added that the police officials’ priority was to maintain law and order.

Immediately after receiving information about the incident, a police posse was rushed to the spot. “We are not under political pressure. There was no power when the miscreants committed the crime. The police sent the victims for a medial examination and controlled the mob. Later, after the medical examination, the complaint was registered at around 12.30 a.m.,” Mr. Agarwal said.
