August 15, 2016 07:10 pm | Updated 07:10 pm IST - HUBBALLI:

The 70th Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour in Hubballi on Monday.

At the Idgah Maidan in Hubballi, Municipal Commissioner Major Siddalingaiah Hiremath hoisted the Tricolour in the presence of MP Pralhad Joshi, MLA Prasad Abbayya and others.

At Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Corporation, Mayor Manjula Akkur unfurled the national flag in the presence of councillors and others. With Monday being the birth anniversary of freedom fighter Sangolli Rayanna, the Mayor and others garlanded the revolutionary’s statue at Brindavan Circle.

Hubballi Tahasildar Shashidhar Madyal hoisted the Tricolour at Nehru Stadium in the presence of former chief minister Jagadish Shettar, MP Pralhad Joshi, MLA Prasad Abbayya, MLCs Srinivas Mane and Pradeep Shettar. Despite the drizzle, hundreds of school children and general public took part the Independence Day celebrations.

At the Hubballi Sports Ground, members of the Hubballi Sports Ground Bachao Samiti led by veteran journalist Patil Puttappa hoisted the national flag. Criticising former chief minister Jagadish Shettar and Dharwad MP Pralhad Joshi for their alleged role in converting the ground into a recreation club, Mr. Puttappa said the leaders were duping the citizens.

Tiranga Yatra

While BJP leaders like Mr. Shettar and Mr. Joshi took out a ‘Tiranga Yatra’ in the city on Monday, several other organisations took out similar rallies with the national flag tied to the motorcycles and few pillion riders waving a big flag.
