Students from Karnataka have not only improved their performance compared to last year but have also done better than students from across the country in both the ICSE (Class 10) and ISC (Class 12) examinations conducted in February and April this year.
In the Class 12 examinations, Karnataka secured a pass per cent of 99.51 per cent. The pass percentage in the Class 10 examinations was 99.77 percent. This is higher than the all-India average of 98.5 per cent passes in the ICSE exam and 96.46 per cent passes in the ISC exam.
Except for seven of the 1,418 students from across 29 schools in the State, all the others passed the ISC exams. Out of a total of 14,130 candidates from across 270 schools in the State, barring 33, all have passed in the ICSE examinations.
Maintaining what seems to be a trend now, the girls in the State have done better than the boys in both the examinations. Girls recorded 99.90 per cent passes, marginally higher than boy’s pass percentage of 99.64 in the Class 10 examinations. Meanwhile, in the Class 12 examinations, girls recorded 99.72 per cent passes, a notch above boys’ pass percentage of 99.29.
Both in the ISC as well as ICSE exams, the southern region recorded the best pass percentage in the country. The southern region’s pass percent is 99.68 per cent in the ICSE exam and 99.14 per cent passes for the ISC exam.
Gerry Arathoon, Chief Executive and Secretary of the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations said that it was no surprise that the southern region fared better than others. He maintained that the schools in the southern region have always been a class apart in terms of quality education.
However, only one student from the State was able to make it to the all-India top three ranks list in the ICSE examination. Sudarshan R. of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Bengaluru who scored 99 per cent got the second rank at the class ten examinations nationally. In the ISC examinations however, none from the State made it to the top three.

Computer science easy, but, mathematics tough
While the highest number of passes was recorded in computer science, mathematics appears to have been a hard nut to crack, in both the class ten and class twelve examinations.
In the ICSE exams, the highest passes have been obtained in physical education (100 per cent) and computer applications (99.99 per cent), while the least is in economics (96.48 per cent) and mathematics (96.77 per cent). Meanwhile, in the ISC exams, the highest percentage of passes was in Bengali (99.90 per cent), Hindi (99.78 per cent) and computer science (99.67 per cent), while the lowest was in Economics (86.47 per cent), Mathematics (92.48 per cent) and Accounts (93.61 per cent).
Fr. Shaju Varghese, principal of Christ School, said that students performed well in computer science as they were tech-savvy. “Once they understand the logic behind a concept, they tend to excel in computers. The mathematics examination was a tough one as the questions were difficult. We also heard that the corrections were quite strict,” he said.
