Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI), one of the oldest medical colleges in the country, has perhaps become the country’s first medical college to establish a fully operative multi-disciplinary research centre for carrying out research in non-communicable and lifestyle diseases.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had identified MMCRI for setting up the research centre and set aside Rs. 5 crore towards developing the infrastructure.

ICMR and MMCRI had entered into an MoU last year and the centre had become functional from this year. The ICMR will fund the research projects for five years and the MMCRI had to take over the centre thereafter.

“Ours is the first medical college to establish a fully operational research centre. Also, three research proposals in biochemistry, psychiatry and paediatrics had been approved by ICMR and a sum of Rs. 34 lakh was being awaited to start off the work,” said MMCRI Dean and Director Krishnamurthy.

Speaking to presspersons on Tuesday, Dr. Krishnamurthy said: “We were able to establish the centre much faster than other medical colleges, thanks to a good team of professionals behind the initiative.”

New ventilators

B.G. Sagar, Medical Superintendent, K.R. Hospital, who was present, said six new ventilators had been installed at MICU in K.R. Hospital at a cost of Rs. 69 lakh with the funding from the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA).

With this, the total number of ventilators had risen to 23, he said, adding that the hospital, based on its bed strength, needs about 100 ventilators. A nominal fee of Rs. 600 a day is charged for using the ventilator.

Other facilities

Dr Krishnamurthy said intercom facility had been introduced in K.R. Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospital for facilitating better communication between the departments.

Resident Medical Officer Chandrashekar, Cheluvamba Hospital Superintendent Radha Mani and Chief Administrative Officer Mahadeva Nayak were present.
