I am in favour of AAP as a movement: Ananthamurthy

Jnanpith Award winning writer U.R. Ananthamurthy has said that parties, which are opposed to both the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and Congress leaders, such as the Aam Aadmi Party, Janata Dal (United) and regional parties should unite and create an alternative front.

In a statement released to the press on Sunday, Prof. Ananthamurthy spelt out his stand on the AAP. He said: “In the present scenario, I am strongly in favour of the AAP, not as a party but as a movement.” He said that movements like the AAP should “develop and grow in the dark of Indian politics”.

The anti-corruption movement, led by Anna Hazare, had “unleashed a new energy” and the AAP had inherited it. “Mr. Hazare is simple and not as cunningly intelligent as our anglicised intellectuals. Frankly we are tired of intellectuals,” said Prof. Ananthamurthy.

He said that corruption had grown so much that people in power were no longer shocked by it.

“There is a lot of talk, but no action. Words have lost all their meaning. It is like an Orwellian state and shows what happens when language is abused. Nothing can be conveyed to the common man, no truth can be told,” he said.
