The Karnataka State Mango Development Board and the Horticulture Department will organise a five-day Mango Mela here from May 5.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Snehal R. told presspersons here on Monday that the Mango Mela would be held simultaneously on the premises of the Horticulture Department office located on Railway Station Road and Kalabhavan in Dharwad and Gokul Garden in Hubballi.

It was decided to enhance the number of days from three to five considering the response. Mango growers who ripen the fruits naturally would be allowed to set up their stalls.

Last year, nearly 80 stalls were put up and this year, the organisers expect the stall numbers to double, she added.

Officials in the Horticulture Department said that at the mela, 127 varieties of mangoes and other fruits grown in north Karnataka would be displayed. The fruits are also available for purchase.

Consumers could buy mango varieties, including Raspuri, Eshadi, Mallika, Kesar, Sindhu, Ratna and Alphonso.

Apart from fruits, various by-products of mango, including pickle, jams, juices, jelly, would be displayed at the mela.

Information on the latest technology in mango cultivation would be disseminated to farmers, they said.

To a query, she said that nearly 30 acres of land have been identified to set up a mango market proposed by the board at Itigatti village on the outskirts of the city.
