House collapses, three of family killed in Gadag district

Incessant rain caused mishap at Gajendragad

A woman and her two grandchildren were buried alive on Monday after the roof of their house caved in at Gajendragad town in Gadag district following incessant rains since the last few days.

According to family members the mishap occurred while they were asleep. Mehaboobi Mucchali (55) and her grandchildren Nazia (8) and Muskan (6) were sleeping on one side of the house, and three others were sleeping on another side.

As the roof caved in, Mehaboobi and her grandchildren were stuck under the debris, while the remaining three suffered serious injuries. It took nearly an hour for the police personnel and others to remove the bodies from under the debris. The three injured, Davalsab, Murtaza and Davalbi, have been admitted to a local hospital. Nazia and Muskan, who lived with their parents in another house in the town, had come to meet their grandmother and had stayed overnight, sources said.

Protest at hospital

The incident led to a protest at the municipal hospital as there was delay in treating the injured. Some residents of the town and relatives of the injured also expressed anger over the municipal officer’s apathy towards meeting the affected family.

Subsequently Ron MLA G.S. Patil visited the site of mishap and consoled the family members. He announced that a compensation of ₹4 lakh each would be given to the family members. Deputy Commissioner of Gadag Manoj Jain and Assistant Commissioner P.S. Manjunath also visited the town.

Mr G.S. Patil also handed over assistance of Rs. 5,000 each for the funeral and said that personally he would give Rs. 20,000 towards funeral expenses.

Meanwhile official sources put the number of houses damaged due to rains in the recent days at 43.
