Confirming the honour killing of a 21-year-old girl in Chandrawadi village in Nanjangud taluk near here, the Mysuru district police said the girl, Madhu, was allegedly poisoned to death by her parents and brother to prevent her from coming in contact with the Dalit boy.
Superintendent of Mysuru district police Abhinav Khare told The Hindu that Madhu's mother Manjula, father Gurumallappa and brother Guruprasad opposed her affair with the Dalit boy belonging to the same village. They poisoned her to death and cremated the body on Monday night without giving the police an opportunity to investigate the matter. The family members, who had been taken in for questioning, have now been arrested.
To a question, Mr. Khare said the police was still investigating how the poison was administered to the girl.
The local Hullahalli police, which had taken the investigation after receiving a tip-off, learnt that the family members of Madhu had hurriedly cremated the body on Monday night though the community's tradition was to bury the dead. The police, however, collected the ashes and other remains from the cremation site and sent it for examination.
