The installation of an additional 66 CCTV cameras, deployment of a drone and erection of special barricades are expected to strengthen police security for this year’s Dasara procession scheduled for September 30.

In addition to the CCTV cameras already existing at traffic junctions across the city, the city police will be installing another 66 cameras along the route of the Jamboo Savari to monitor the law and order situation and keep a tab on the crowds.

The footage from the cameras installed along the route of the procession will be continuously monitored by the police personnel in the control room and alert the personnel for necessary action.

A drone will also be deployed over the route of the procession to monitor the crowds. The footage from the drone will also be used by the police to manage the crowds.

Unlike in previous years when private players would fly the drone over the route, this year the city police will be using the police department’s drone to be brought in from Ballari.

Speaking about security measures for Dasara with presspersons here on Tuesday, City Police Commissioner A. Subramanyeshwara Rao clarified that media and private persons will not be allowed to fly drones in view of restrictions by the centre.

The special barricades described by Mr. Rao as law and order barricades will be erected this year as the spectators had crossed the barricades at several places along the procession route last year. The barricades will also have a mesh, he said.

History-sheeters in check

As part of its preventive action against anti-social elements creating trouble during the festivities, a total of 720 history-sheeters in the city had been bound over by the police by executing bond with surety.

Similarly, action has been taken to round up other criminals engaged in robbery, theft and other activities.

Also, police personnel in uniform as well as mufti or plain clothes will be deployed in crowded areas to prevent pick pocketing and lifting of bags and suitcases.

Help desks

The police will be setting up a total of 30 help desks in different parts of the city to provide information to the public and tourists.

The help desks, which will remain open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., will be manned by police as well as guides from the Tourism Department.
