The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday permitted the State government and the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) to go ahead with the work to build an administrative block for the university’s new campus at Ramanagaram.
Justice A.S. Bopanna passed an interim order, modifying the earlier interim order which had directed the authorities not to precipitate the matter after some of the Syndicate members of the university filed a petition last year challenging the contract given to a private firm for constructing the administrative block.
The court modified the interim order after the government pointed out that the university Syndicate itself had agreed to provide financial support for the construction of the administrative block.
Meanwhile, the court clarified that it is for the State government and the university to discuss on the requirement of any further funds.
The petitioners, Chandrashekar and others, all members of the RGUHS Syndicate, had claimed that the State had revived a decade-old contract with Nagarjuna Construction Company Ltd. for construction of the building with an eye on huge funds available with the university. The contract given for the company in 2007 had landed in a controversy as it was given prior to even making provision in the RGUHS Act for relocating its headquarters to Ramanagaram and other issues.
The court adjourned further hearing on the petition.
