Heavy security for Karnataka bypoll

BANGALORE: As many as 4,654 police personnel and Home Guards will be deployed for the by-elections to be held in five Assembly constituencies on Tuesday. Five companies (approximately 450 personnel) of the Tamil Nadu police will also be deployed, Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) A.R. Infant has said.

Speaking to The Hindu on Monday, Mr. Infant said that they would also make use of 11 companies of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (990 personnel). They will be deployed in 1,110 polling stations. The State police would deploy 180 mobile patrolling teams. Each patrolling team comprising of a sub-inspector and five policemen will cover about 20 polling stations, he said.

So far, the State police have arrested 586 people in connection to various cases related to election malpractices. As many as 223 cases have been registered under the various preventive acts, 38 cases for violation under the Excise Act and two cases under the Arms Act, Mr. Infant said.
