The major rivers in Shimoga district, including Tungabhadra, Sharavathi and Varada are in spate owing to the heavy downpour on Friday. Vehicular movements on the Shimoga-Tirthahalli stretch of National Highway 13 was suspended for the second consecutive day as the road near Mandagadde remained inundated with water.
Water at the rate of 72,586 cusec was discharged from Tungabhadra reservoir resulting in eight houses in low-lying Wadi-e-Huda locality in Shimoga city flooded with water. The Varada was flowing above the danger mark in Sagar taluk.
The district administration had declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Friday. The water-level in the Linganamakki reservoir has risen by 4 ft in past 24 hours owing to torrential rain in its catchment areas. The water-level in Bhadra reservoir also went up by 3 ft on Friday.
There was also a heavy downpour in many parts of Hassan and Chikmagalur districts on Friday. Chikmagalur district had declared a holiday for schools in Sringeri, Koppa, N.R. Pura, Mudigere and Chikmagalur taluks. The water-level at the Hemavati reservoir at Goruru is reaching the maximum level, prompting the dam authorities to issue a warning to people residing downstream.
At the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) in Sriranagapatna, Mandya, the water-level was 115.2 ft on Friday evening, according to reports received here. The catchments of the Cauvery in Madikeri, Somwarpet and Virajpet taluks have been receiving copious rainfall for the last 24 hours, an official at the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. (CNNL) told The Hindu .
Several villages in Kodagu district and many areas in the upstream of KRS have been experiencing incessant rain. The rainfall may significantly increase the inflow rate in the next 24 hours, he said.
The reservoir-level at the Kabini is expected to increase as the catchment area of the Kapila in the Wayanad region of Kerala was receiving good rain.
