There was widespread rain in the district on Monday and Tuesday. According to the district administration, Davangere received average rainfall of 39.6 mm. As against the average rainfall of 84.2 mm in May, the district has already received 73.4 mm.
According to sources, Davangere city received 75.2 mm rain; Harihar taluk, 43 mm; Jagalur taluk, 64 mm; Harapanahalli, 28 mm; and Honnali, 14.5 mm. Chennagiri taluk received a record 106 mm rain.
Deputy Commissioner S.S. Pattanashetty, in a statement here on Wednesday, said that the rain had caused some damage. As many as 25 houses had been damaged in Jagalur; eight houses each in Davangere and Harihar taluks; seven in Honnali; three in Chennagiri; and two in Harapanahalli, he added.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, crops were damaged on over 14 hectares and the estimated loss was Rs. 34 lakh. Public property was also damaged and the loss was estimated at Rs. 7.65 lakh. Although the rain was delayed, it has allowed farmers to take up paddy, cotton, maize and sugarcane cultivation.
According to sources in Chennagiri, arecanut crop on over 1.8 hectares were completely damaged in the rain. Paddy fields were also flooded, and the crop loss was being assessed. Three persons were injured when a house in Banuvalli village of Harihar taluk collapsed because of the rain, official sources said.
