Continuous rain in several parts of Hassan and Chikmagalur districts has affected normal life. A person was washed away in the floods near Balehonnur and South Western Railway cancelled trains on Wednesday following landslips in the Western Ghats.

Heavy rain was reported in parts of Sakleshpur, Alur in Hassan district and Sringeri, Koppa and Mudigere taluks of Chikmagalur districts.

The highest rainfall in Hassan was recorded at Maranahalli in Sakleshpur taluk in 24 hours up to 6 a.m. on Thursday.

As much as 233 mm of rainfall was recorded in the village.

The second highest of 202.4 mm rainfall was recorded at Hettur.

Hassan city recorded 20.4 mm rainfall, while Sakleshpur town received 116.4 mm rainfall.

In Chikmagalur

In Chikmagalur district, the highest rainfall of 185.4 mm was recorded in Sringeri, followed by Koppa with 136 mm, Mudigere with 96 mm and N.R. Pura with 77 mm.

The least was recorded in Chikmagalur (28.2 mm). Many low-lying areas in Sringeri, Mudigere and Koppa taluks are flooded. As many as four houses were damaged partly on Wednesday in heavy rain. Road connectivity to many residential areas was badly hit.

The connectivity between Karekatte and Sringeri was affected.

Similarly, those reaching Sringeri from Tirthahalli had to take alternative routes.

Hemavathi dam

Following good rainfall in the catchment area, the inflow in the Hemavathi reservoir has increased. At 6 a.m. on Thursday, the inflow was at the rate of 18,127 cusecs as against 4,775 cusecs on the corresponding day last year. The water-level in the Hemavathi dam stands at 2,891.83 ft as against the full reservoir level of 2,922 ft. The water-level on the same day last year was 2,874.90 ft.

Landslips

Heavy downpour caused landslips at three places in Sakleshpur taluk affecting movement of trains in the Western Ghats. Two trains connecting Yeshwanthpur (Bangalore) and Kannur were cancelled on Wednesday night. “There were three instances of landslips near Yadakumari and Donigal in Sakleshpur taluk. Trains were cancelled as tracks were to be cleared. We cleared them on Thursday and the day train connecting Mangalore and Yeshwanthpur operated,” said C.M. Ranganath, Senior Divisional Engineer of the Mysore Division of South Western Railway. He added that trains might be cancelled again if it continued to rain in the forest area.
