A 20-year-old woman has given birth to a girl baby weighing 6.82 kg at Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences. The weight has been considered the highest so far reported in India.

Nandini, of Doddihalli in Belur taluk, complained of labour pain on Sunday morning and was brought to HIMS the same day. The doctors conducted a caesarean surgery on Sunday night. They were surprised to find that the newborn weighes6.82 kg.

Nandini is married to Arun of Doddihalli, who runs a bakery. The couple have been married for two years. This is their first child.

Dr. S.R. Kumar, senior resident, Department of Paediatrics, HIMS, told The Hindu, “The baby’s weight is abnormal. Though she looks healthy, we are conducting some tests to be certain.”

A CT scan was conducted on Tuesday and the findings were normal. “We have conducted the ultra-sound scanning of the abdomen and hormonal analysis is yet to be done,” he said. The doctor has decided to keep the baby under observation for a week in the hospital.

Overweight newborns are quite normal in cases where the mother is diabetic. “In this case however, the mother is not diabetic. We are assessing the reasons for the overweight,” Dr. Kumar added.
