The Hassan Zilla Panchayat’s (ZP) general meeting convened here on Friday was postponed to July 5 owing to lack of attendance. None of the 23 Janata Dal (Secular) members attended the meeting, necessitating an adjournment. This was the first meeting convened after the elections for the posts of president and vice president were held.

A. Manju, minister for Animal Husbandry and Sericulture, who is also in-charge of Hassan district, and MLC M.A. Gopala Swamy attended the meeting.

ZP president Shwetha Devaraj adjourned the meeting for half-an-hour as there was no quorum.

The strength did not increase even after the members assembled again. Finally, the meeting was postponed to July 5.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer R. Venkatesh Kumar said that quorum required to hold a meeting was 28. However, only 22 members, including four taluk panchayat presidents and two legislators, attended it, necessitating the postponement.

Earlier, JD(S) members had skipped the meetings convened to elect the president and vice-president three times.

The JD(S) has been opposing the reservation fixed for the president’s post.
