Parishat to finalise the venue during executive panel meet on November 16

November 03, 2014 12:36 pm | Updated 12:36 pm IST - Hassan:

The Hassan district Kannada Sahitya Parishat is all set to get an opportunity to host the 81st Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelan, which is scheduled to be held in 2015.

Following differences that had arisen over the holding of sammelan at a venue in Haveri district, the Kannada Sahitya Parishat is likely to finalise Shravanbelgola, a popular tourist destination for the Gomateshwara statue, in Channarayapatna taluk. The parishat is likely to take a decision on this subject during its executive committee meeting to be held at Halmidi, near Belur, during Halmidi Utsav to be held on November 16.

During the previous sammelan held at Madikeri, the parishat had decided to hold the next sammelan at Haveri. The parishat held several meetings to select a place for the sammelan in Haveri district.

As the leaders of Haveri failed to arrive at a consensus, the parishat decided to shift the event to some other venue.

Appeal made

According to sources, president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat Pundalika Halambi had discussed with Charukeerti Bhattaraka Swami of the Jain Math in Shravanbelgola on this subject. The seer is understood to have expressed his willingness to host the event. H.L. Janardana, president of the Hassan district Kannada Sahitya Parishat, said that he had appealed to the Central Sahitya Parishat to provide the authorities concerned with an opportunity to organise the sammelan in Hassan district this time.

Meeting

“We are hopeful that the executive committee will resolve to hold the sammelan at Shravanbelgola. We have promised the parishat that the event will be successful, if held at Shravanbelgola,” he said.

In the past, the sahitya sammelan was held in Hassan four times. The last time it was held was in 1996, when noted poet Channaveera Kanavi presided over the sammelan. Before that, the event was held in Hassan in 1919, 1952 and 1967.

During previous sammelan at Madikeri, it had been decided to hold the event in Haveri district
