Hadapads condemn astrologer for ‘derogatory remarks’

August 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 01:28 pm IST - RAICHUR:

Condemning the alleged “derogatory remarks” by K.N Somayaji, an astrologer, on barbers, people of the Hadapad community took to streets here on Wednesday. They burnt the effigy of the astrologer at Ambedkar Circle and raised slogans against him.

“The so-called astrologer has insulted the very profession of hair-dressing and Hadapad community that has traditionally been doing the profession.

The government should impose a ban on television programmes and people that hurt the feelings of any community,” Jambanna Karadakal, a leader of Hadapada Appanna Samaj Seva Sangha that organised the agitation.

“We believe in the supremacy of physical labour advocated by Basavanna, 12th century reformer. Insulting a labour community amounts to insulting the Basava tradition,” said Basanna Sarjapur another leader of the organisation.

He condemned the increasing attacks on the Hadapad community in the State and demanded that the government act against the culprits.

The barbers took out a procession and submitted a memorandum, addressed to the Chief Minister, to the office of Deputy Commissioner.

Nagaraj, Mahabalesh, Pampapathi Manvi, Sanganna Pamanakallur, Basavaraj Heera and other community leaders were present.
