The district recorded 55.42 per cent polling in the elections to the urban local bodies that were held on Thursday.
As per the final figures, Gulbarga saw the lowest turnout (51.41 per cent), followed by Shahbad (57.13 per cent), while the highest was recorded in Jewargi (71.55 per cent).
Sources said that the turnout in Aland was 68.73 per cent. Elections to the Aland Town Municipal Council saw an intense competition between the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Karnataka Janata Paksha. Sedam registered the second highest percentage in the district at 70.32. The turnout for elections to the Afzalpur Town Panchayat was 67.29 per cent, and for Chincholi, 65.52 per cent. In Chittapur, it was 61.96 per cent.
The polling percentages in Gulbarga and Shahbad came as a surprise in political circles here. Even the Muslim-dominated wards in the city, which usually record a high polling percentage, saw a turnout as low as 35 per cent.
As per present indications, no political party will get an absolute majority in the Gulbarga City Corporation council. The votes will be counted on March 11, and the results will be announced by 1 p.m.
