GP polls: 8,328 contestants in the fray

The May 29 gram panchayat elections in Mandya district will witness a strong electoral battle in all the seven taluks.

After the last day for withdrawal on Thursday, 8,328 contestants, including 3,875 women, have been left in the fray for the 3,826 posts.

As many as 467 members have been elected unopposed, according to a release from the Department of Information and Public Relations. Out of the 234 gram panchayats in the district, 230 have completed their term, necessitating the polls. The district administration has decided to set up 1,694 polling booths in the district for the electorate to cast their votes.
