Unable to prevail upon the contractors for giving a revised salary (as fixed by the Labour Department) to 120 pourakarmikas deployed for the underground drainage (UGD) work here, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) said at the council meeting on Friday that it will seek the government’s suggestion on direct appointment of pourakarmikas.
An association of pourakarmikas had urged the MCC to ask the three contractors through whom the UGD maintenance work had been outsourced to 120 pourakarmikas, to pay the salary as fixed by the Department of Labour, with effect from April 1, 2014.
Each pourakarmika was getting Rs. 10,445 a month instead of a revised wage of Rs. 12,241 a month. The contractors were supposed to pay an additional Rs. 1,796 to the pourakarmikas’ salary being disbursed at the moment.
This issue came up for discussion at the meeting when some councillors wanted to know the status.
The MCC is unable to call fresh tenders for outsourcing the UGD maintenance work to others due to legal issue. MCC Commissioner C.G. Betsurmath told the meeting that the MCC will write to the government on the procedure to undertake direct appointment of pourakarmikas.
