Allamprabhu Bettadur, executive president, Hyderabad-Karnatak Horata Samiti, Koppal-Kalaburagi, has urged the State government to set up Indira canteens in the backward districts of Hyderabad Karnataka and North Karnataka region.

Mr. Bettadur has, in a press release, said that the State government should accord top priority to Hyderabad Karnataka region where poverty looms large and North Karnataka districts whenever it plans to introduce a new facility.

The State government, which has introduced Indira canteen in Bengaluru, should also show interest in starting such canteens in all the taluks in the six most backward districts of the region and also in North Karnataka at the earliest for the benefit of the poor.

He has expressed anguish that the State government is not providing such facilities and benefits under welfare schemes until the people of the region launched a struggle. A demand from the region known for its hot day temperatures, to install solar power generation units has not been conceded. The government should realise why the people of this backward region are demanding Statehood and stop discriminating against them as far as providing facilities is concerned. Any such discrimination would be strongly opposed, he cautioned.
