Govt. urged to extend time for Aadhaar-PDS link

May 13, 2016 04:44 pm | Updated 04:44 pm IST - Mandya

Residents of various slums and members of two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) took out a protest rally here on Friday to urge the state government to extend the last date for linking Aadhaar numbers with ration card details.

The state government, as per the Supreme Court direction, to weed out bogus ration cards, had directed the ration card beneficiaries to link their Aadhaar numbers with ration card details by May 15.

However, only around six lakh consumers of the 20.4 lakh beneficiaries of the Public Distribution System (PDS) have linked the details in Mandya district.

As the remaining beneficiaries may face difficulties in receiving the PDS benefits, members of Karnataka Janashakti and Mandya Zilla Shramikanagara Nivasigala Okkuta Mahila Munnade (a forum of slum residents) staged the protest.

The rally passed through various streets before culminating near the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
