Governor to attend UAS-R convocation

Fifth convocation of University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur (UAS-R) is scheduled to be held on Wednesday at the main auditorium in the University campus here on Wednesday.

Addressing a media conference at Reporters’ Guild here on Monday, Vice Chancellor of the University Dr. P.M. Salimath said that Vajubhai R. Vala, Governor of Karnataka who is also the Chancellor of the University will preside over the event.

“For the first time after the establishment of UAS, Raichur in 2009, the Governor is participating in the convocation. The Governor’s office has confirmed his arrival,” Mr. Salimath said. Padma Bhushan Dr. Rajendra Singh Paroda, chairman, Trust for Advancement of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi, would deliver convocation address and Minister of Agriculture for State Mr. Krishna Byre Gowda would be present, he added.

171 undergraduates and 106 postgraduate students including 10 doctoral degree holders for the first time form the University would be conferred, he said.

“In order to motivate and support the farming community, the university has decided to recognise one farmer/ farmer-women under the jurisdiction of the University and will be honoured with farmer-scientist/ farmerwoman-scientist award with a certificate along with a cash prize of Rs. 50,000,” Dr. Salimath said.

Best teacher, best scientist, best extension scientist, best research station, best supporting staff, best field assistant and best agricultural labour awards, apart from an incentive award for three scientists who have implemented the outside funded projects worth more than Rs. 25 lakh, would also be given in the convocation he added.

Dr. B.V. Patil, former Vice Chancellor and present Director (Education) claimed that the young University was known for its academic excellence. “Of the total 67 Plant Protection Officers recruited by Staff Selection Commission in a national level recruitment, 15 belonged UAS-R. This is a testimony of quality of education being imparted to our students and their employability,” he said.

Dr. K.P. Viswanatha, Director (Extension), Dr. Shankaregowda, Associate Director (Research), Dr. D.M. Chandargi, Registrar and others were present.
