The names of Ugrappa, Saradgi, Jabbar Khan, Jaimala, Ivan D’Souza likely to be officially announced on Wednesday

Ending speculation over whether the government would heed the demand of the Opposition, especially the Bharatiya Janata Party, not to recommend the names of five Congress members for being nominated to the Legislative Council, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday presented a list to the Governor H.R. Bhardwaj seeking his approval.

Finding time amid his busy schedule in view of the ongoing legislature session, Mr. Siddaramaiah, accompanied by some Ministers and officials, went to the Raj Bhavan in the evening and submitted the list to Mr. Bhardwaj.

The list contains the names of the former Leader of Opposition in the Council of V.S. Ugrappa, the former MP Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi, Jabbar Khan (MLC), actor Jaimala and Ivan D’Souza.

According to sources in the Chief Minister’s secretariat, the Governor has given approval to the list and an official announcement of the names is likely to be made on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister was advised by some party leaders and Ministers to present the list to Mr. Bhardwaj before his tenure comes to an end on June 29.

The Janata Dal(S) bagged two seats, while the Congress and the BJP secured one seat each when the results of the elections held to four seats of the Legislative Council from the teachers and graduates constituencies on June 20 were announced on Tuesday.

Janata Dal(S) candidate Puttanna achieved a hat-trick of wins by defeating BJP’s Neelaiah in the Bangalore Teachers Constituency. BJP candidate S.V. Sankanur defeated Janata Dal(S) candidate Vasanth Horatti in the West Graduates Constituency, while BJP’s chief whip in the Council K.H. Shivayogiswamy was defeated by Janata Dal(S) candidate Chowdareddy in the South-East Graduates Constituency. BJP nominee Shashil Namoshi was defeated by Congress candidate Sharanappa Mattur in the North-East Teachers Constituency.
