Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar has charged the Congress government in the State with trying to hush up the lottery scam.
As in the case of the multi-crore fake stamp paper racket that was busted in 2001, many influential politicians and top police officials had nexus with those running the illegal lottery racket. It was unfortunate that the State government had failed to deal sternly with those involved in the lottery scam, he said at a press conference here on Monday. The government suspended Inspector-General of Police Alok Kumar and Superintendent of Police Dharanesh for allegedly having links with those involved in the scam.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which was probing the case, had said in its interim report that a few more top police officials were involved in the scam. The government should make public the interim report and suspend all those indicted in the report, he said. The State government, which had displayed great enthusiasm in tabling the CID’s interim report on the death of IAS officer D.K. Ravi, was now trying to goof up things in the illegal lottery case. Even after the suspension of top police officials, the places from where the racket was being operated had not been raided.
CBI probe sought
As it had been suspected that persons outside Karnataka might be involved in the scam, the government should hand over the probe to Central Bureau of Investigation to bring out the truth, he said.
