The Hyderabad Karnataka Horata Samiti, Gulbarga, has suspended its protest against the government following an assurance given by the government that it will halt all recruitment process till the rules providing reservation for candidates from the region are finalised.
The samiti organised a protest demonstration and convention here on Wednesday demanding that the Chief Minister honour his promise made in November last to withhold all the recruitment process.
Samiti president Vaijanath Patil told The Hindu that Animal Husbandry Minister Revu Naik Belamagi met the samiti members at Freedom Park on behalf of the Chief Minister and conveyed to them the government’s decision.
“We have decided to suspend the protest for a week. If the government does not stop all the recruitment process and does not finalise the reservation rules by that time, the samiti will intensify its protest,” Mr. Patil, who had been in the forefront of the eagitation demanding special status for the region, said.
Injustice
Mr. Patil said that by virtue of the amendment to Article 371 of the Constitution, residents of the region are entitled for special reservation in government jobs within the region. About 23,000 government posts at various levels are lying vacant in the region.
The Chief Minister had promised to halt the recruitment process till rules for the purpose were framed. However, the government is going ahead with several recruitment processes, including that of teachers and engineers. Such a measure will severely affect the jobless educated youth in Hyderabad Karnataka region, Mr. Patil said.
According to his information, a committee headed by the Principal Secretary of Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR), has drafted the rules pertaining to reservation and recommended a halt to all the recruitment process till those rules get the Union government’s nod.
