If the State government’s plan to start its own cable television network materialises, soon you may be able to get a cable TV connection at a lower rate that what you are paying now.

R. Roshan Baig, Minister for Infrastructure Development, Information and Haj, who met with members of cable TV operators’ association here on Tuesday, said the government was planning to start its own cable TV network.

“There is opposition from cable operators. But we are keen on starting a government network as we are aware about how people are fleeced by cable operators who charge around Rs. 400 for a connection,” the Minister said.

Stating that the proposal was based on the Tamil Nadu model, the Minister said: “There are nearly 2,500 cable TV operators in the city and around two lakh operators in the State. We have had two meetings in this regard and they have been opposing our plan. But we are keen and will definitely take it forward.”

The Minister said the government was also keen to set up a media city on the Kanteerava Studio premises.

The Minister said discussions were under way on the proposal to start a government TV channel to telecast proceedings of the legislature.
