Members of the district units of the All-India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO), All-India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) and All-India Mahila Samskrutika Sanghatane (AIMSS), joined by medical, paramedical students held a demonstration in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue here on Monday to condemn the gang-rape of a medical student at Manipal, near Udupi, recently.

The incident had made everyone hang their heads in shame. The government must ensure protection to women, the members said.

President of the district AIDYO unit Umadevi said crimes against women were being sensationalised in the media... Perpetrators of such crimes hardly get stringent punishment, she said.

District secretary of the AIMSS P.S. Sandhya said the government must ensure protection to the women and girls in colleges and schools.
