Good Samaritan Act will be tabled in monsoon session: Jayachandra

Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Minor irrigation T.B. Jayachandra said that the Karnataka Good Samaritan and Medical Professionals Protection Act, which will protect persons who help accident victims from police questioning and courts, will be tabled in this monsoon session.

Speaking to reporters on the premises of Tumkur University here on Saturday, Mr. Jayachandra said that though many people wanted to help accident victims, they do not help fearing long-drawn processes involving the police and courts. Hence, to protect them from harassment from police and courts, the government will soon bring out this Act. Under the Act, people who help accident victims will be awarded, he said.

Mr. Jayachandra claimed that the law is the first of its kind in the country and will help many people to save the lives of accident victims.

The Act will also help to get transport expenses within 24 hours to those who bear the expenses of shifting the accident victims.

He added that the 'Mukhyamantri Santwana Harish Yojana', which provides cashless treatment to accident victims in empanelled hospitals withing 48 hours of the accident, will also be brought under the Act.
