The global economic crisis has necessitated an in-depth study of Marxism, G.V. Sriram Reddy, State secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist), has said.
Inaugurating a seven-day State-level workshop of the party here on Sunday, he said the solutions to the problems created by pro-capitalist policies lie in Marxism.
He alleged there had been efforts across the country to corner Left parties. “Thousands of party workers were not allowed to submit nomination papers during the panchayat elections in West Bengal. Around 180 party activists were killed in two months in the State,” Mr. Reddy alleged.
He said the Left parties were being sidelined politically as well. “Recently when there were talks of the Third Front, the role of Left parties was not mentioned at all. Even in Karnataka, the Janata Dal (Secular), which was earlier part of such alliances with us, chose to ignore the Left,” he said.
Responding to the Planning Commission’s observations on poverty in the country, he challenged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh or Congress president Sonia Gandhi to spend a day in a village with Rs. 22.
G.N. Nagaraj, member of the party’s State committee, released books brought out by the publication wing. Senior V.J.K. Nair and V. Sukumar were present.
