A girl, who reportedly fled her house following alleged harassment by her husband and mother-in-law, was rescued by the Railway Police Force here on Tuesday.
After reaching Hubballi from Mysuru, the girl had lost her way and was found loitering in the Railway Yard near the Hubballi Railway station on Tuesday.
Chayamani (18) is a native of Bore village near Kamegowdanahalli village of Hunasur taluk of Mysuru district. She is an orphan and was married to an autorickshaw driver reportedly at the age of 13 by her relatives.
She told the police that she lost a baby in her womb three months ago and she was fed up by the harassment of her husband Kumar Gowda, and her mother-in-law.
Chayamani said she wanted to find a livelihood of her own and didn’t want to return to her husband’s place. She also said she wanted to become a dancer and a singer.
Assistant Sub-Inspector of RPF B.N. Kuberappa handed her over to Manavi Family Counselling Centre located at Unakal in Hubballi.
Sujata Banakar, a counsellor at the centre, told The Hindu that the girl was previously treated at a counselling centre in Hubballi for depression a year ago and subsequently her husband had taken her back.
“She told me that she wanted to go to the centre and would like to take up a job. She said her husband always suspected her conduct and she had to leave her house fed up by harassment,” Ms. Sujata said.
She said that the girl would be temporarily lodged at the Maitri Shelter at Gabbur on the outskirts of Hubballi.
“We will contact Odanadi, an NGO in Mysuru. With their help, we will try to resolve her problems,” Ms Sujata added.
She says she was harassed by her husband
