Karnataka Janata Paksha (KJP) president B.S. Yeddyurappa on Thursday urged party workers to prepare for the the Lok Sabha elections scheduled in 2014.
Addressing a meeting here convened to discuss the party’s performance in the Assembly elections, the former Chief Minister tried to instil confidence among party leaders and workers and prepare them for the Lok Sabha elections.
He said that there was no need to brood as the party had “fared well and succeeded in winning six seats”. Without naming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he observed that the party with which he was associated earlier had won two seats in 1984. “I struggled hard for nearly 40 years to bring that party to power,” he added.
Considering the experiments in the neighbouring States, where regional parties had consolidated their position after consistent struggle, he said it would take some time for the KJP to improve its position. “We have to wait patiently for that to happen,” he said.
Even the Congress did not come to power on its own strength. Division of votes had helped the Congress to win 121 seats, he observed. “Our calculations went wrong. Several factors worked against the party. Despite that, we have succeeded in securing six seats,” he said.
Senior party leader K.H. Srinivas spoke about how the BJP had been humbled by the Yeddyurappa factor at the hustings.
The former Minister C.M. Udasi asked the workers to strive and ensure that the party won at least 10 seats in the Lok Sabha elections.
Party leaders, including V. Dhananjaya Kumar, Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli and B.R. Patil, and candidates and office-bearers of the State and district units were present.
