Visitors to Mysuru can soon get a panoramic view of the city, besides a close-up view of the KRS, Mysuru palace and other architectural wonders as high-resolution telescopes will be installed atop Chamundi Hills.

The district administration has resolved to install these telescopes before the Dasara festivities begin. The high-resolution telescopes will enable tourists to get a view of Town Hall, Clock Tower, Gordon House, Crawford Hall, and Karanji lake, among other places.

D. Randeep, Deputy Commissioner of Mysuru district, told The Hindu here on Tuesday that the telescopes will be installed in about half-an-acre land close to the Watch Tower or Gali Mantapa. He said that the viewing time will be fixed and the facility will be free of cost. The concept of installing telescopes was conceived long ago on the lines of telescopes installed at Doddabetta in Ooty, he said.

The authorities do not see any major problem in allotting forestland for the purpose since no clearance is required from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests if the land to be transferred does not exceed one hectare. The district administration had rebuilt the Gali Mantapa, which was damaged last year following heavy rain. The mantapa is a popular hangout among tourists. The total cost of installation of telescopes will be ₹45 lakh.
