Heavy discharge of water from upstream reservoirs has resulted in the Bharachukki and Gaganachukki waterfalls in the Mandya-Chamarajanagar border swell to enormous proportion.

While Gaganachukki is in Malavalli taluk of Mandya district, Bharachukki comes under the jurisdiction of Kollegal taluk of Chamarajanagar district.

For the past three weeks, these waterfalls have been in full splendour, as the State has been releasing a huge quantum of water from the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) in Mandya and the Kabini reservoir in Mysuru to neighbouring Tamil Nadu to meet the terms of the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

Upstream areas of Bharachukki and Gaganachukki have been experiencing widespread rain for the last two weeks. Also, Mandya district received 131.66 mm of rainfall from 8 a.m. of Saturday to 8 a.m. of Monday, officials at the Agriculture Department told The Hindu on Monday. Meanwhile, the Police Department has deployed additional security personnel to prevent possible drowning incidents as there are many whirlpools and deep pits formed on the bed of the river. “We have also put some boards to caution the tourists,” a senior police officer in Mandya told The Hindu.
