Gadkari to inaugurate Scania bus plant today

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari will inaugurate the first Indian bus manufacturing facility of Sweden-based Scania Commercial Vehicles India Pvt. Ltd. at Narasapaur Industrial Area near Kolar on Tuesday.

Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy will participate as chief guest, Scania CV president and Chief Executive Officer Martin Lundstedt told reporters on Monday.

Swedish Minister for Infrastructure Anna Johansson will also participate. The plant’s present manufacturing capacity is about 1,000 buses a year, he added.

Senior vice-president of Scania Group, Klas Dahlberg, said about 92 per cent of the plant’s employees will be from Karnataka, and among them, 9 per cent will be from Kolar. Installation of water purification units and construction of toilets at the government schools, and teaching English to the students, are the part of company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, he said.
